In The Spotlight: AntikBar Auction - 1929 General Election Poster Collection

Feature ahead of our original vintage poster auction on Saturday 16 November:  

  Our last auction of the year features a collection of 1929 UK General Election posters issued by the Labour, Liberal and Conservation parties. This election resulted in a hung parliament with the Labour Party under the leadership of Ramsay MacDonald winning the most seats (287). The Conservative Party led by Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin won 260 seats and the Liberal Party under the leadership of the former Prime Minister David Lloyd George won 59 seats.

  Universal Suffrage: Known as the "Flapper Election" following the Equal Franchise Act of 1928 that gave women over 21 years old the same right to vote as men, many of these election campaign posters target these new voters:

  Rising Unemployment: The posters also reflect the plans of the parties to address the economic depression in the aftermath of World War One and to improve working conditions after the 1926 General Strike, under the slogans We Can Conquer Unemployment (Liberals), Safety First (Conservatives) and Labour and the Nation (Labour):
