Engelhorns Romanbibliothek Ludwig Hohlwein

£750.00

Original antique advertising poster for Engelhorns Romanbibliothek / novel library featuring a great design by the notable German poster artist Ludwig Hohlwein (1874-1949) depicting a gentleman wearing a fashionable 18th century Georgian style suit and wig, reading a book whilst walking with a black cat at his feet, set within a line border with the text in stylised lettering above and below. The Engelhorn publishing house was founded by Johann Christoph Jean Engelhorn (1818-1897) in 1860; his son Carl Engelhorn (1849-1926) expanded the business in 1876 into a library, which formed the foundation of the Stuttgart Public Library in 1901; in 1910 he sold the business to his partner Paul Schumann and Adolf Spemann; in 1956 the Engelhorn Verlag was taken over by the Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt DVA. Poor condition, staining, creasing, tears, foxing, paper losses.
