Original vintage poster featuring an illustrated map of French West Africa / Afrique Occidentale Francaise marking the capital cities, towns, ports, Sahara Desert and rivers in Mauritania Senegal Guinea Sierra Leone Liberia Cote d'Ivoire / Ivory Coast Gold Coast Sudan Niger / Nigeria Haute Volta (Republic of Upper Volta now Burkina Faso) Gold Coast Togo and Dahomey with trees and animals including giraffe, deer, crocodile, lions, elephant and birds with fish on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Guinea within an ornate decorated border of tribal masks, a person playing drums, music instruments, a shield and spears, fruit and vegetables, and three small images of cranes in a shipping dock, a factory and worker on a tractor in a farm highlighting the agriculture and trade industry in the region, the bold title text in yellow above and information in French below - French West Africa immense and surprisingly diverse the AOF unites in its eight territories an area of 4,747,000 km2 (8 times that of the Metropolis) a population of 17 1/2 million inhabitants Capital Dakar 300,000 inhabitants.
