Ile De France Transatlantique Art Deco
£950.00
Original vintage cruise travel poster featuring a painting of the SS Ile de France ocean liner sailing at sea towards the viewer above a map showing the routes across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to America and the Pacific Ocean provided by the French shipping company Compagnie Generale Transatlantique (established 1855; French Line CGT). Launched in 1926 the SS Ile de France was the first steamship to be decorated in an Art Deco style with elegant rooms, a grand staircase, luxurious dining room, neo-Gothic style chapel, shooting gallery, sun deck, carousel for children and a gymnasium; during World War Two she was stripped out and converted into a British military troop ship then served as prisoner of war camp until the end of the war; she was returned to CGT in 1945 and restored, continuing as a popular luxury crossing from 1949; in 1959 she was sold for disposal. Poor condition, trimmed at the bottom, restored paper loss, restored tears, restored creasing, backed on linen.
