Original vintage London Transport poster The Proud City featuring a painting of The Noble Fabric of the Church of St Clement Danes by Walter E. Spradbery (1889-1969) showing the church spire rising above the city ruins caused by bombing during World War Two into the sky with green trees in the foreground and a poem by John Gay (1685-1732) below - Where the fair columns of St Clement stand Whose straiten’d bounds encroach upon the Strand - and a note: This historic church burnt down in an air raid, stood on an "island" in the middle of The Strand, one of London’s busiest streets. This is one of a series of six posters displayed in London by the London Passenger Transport Board. Printed by Baynard Press, London. Good condition, restored tears, restored creases, light staining, backed on linen.
