Original vintage British Railways poster for Manchester by the notable painter and poster artist Claude Buckle (1905-1973), one of a series of posters featuring the UK's Civic Centres. Great image of the city's historic buildings including the 1930s Town Hall Annexe with the neo-Gothic spire of the Victorian Town Hall and the curve of the classical designed domed Central Library with the city's coat of arms above and British Railways logo below, the text reading: "Civic Centres - Manchester - Great inland port and home to the cotton industry Population 703,175. In addition to cotton spinning and textiles, principal industries are heavy and electrical engineering and the manufacture of paint, wallpaper, clothing and chemicals. In all these activities the railways play a vital part. For over a century they have maintained an unexcelled nation-wide passenger and freight service, essential to the life and prosperity of thriving centres of commerce.
