Royal Northern Hospital

Original antique poster for the Royal Northern Hospital N7 featuring the smart new hospital with a person on the main staircase entrance, people walking by a fruit stall and flower sellers, a bus stop and a General London bus driving by a sign announcing the site of the proposed extension. This general hospital and centre for postgraduate medical education was founded in 1856, moving to Holloway Road in 1888 and becoming the Royal Northern Hospital in 1911; the building was designed by architects Young and Hall and was opened in 1923 by the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII); construction on the extension started in 1929; the hospital closed in 1992 when its services were merged with other NHS North London centres; the site is now flats with the Royal Northern Gardens and memorial wall on the former casualty department.
