Shell-Mex House River Thames London Art Deco


Original vintage poster featuring a painting by Sir Henry Rushbury (1889-1968) of Shell Mex House with its clock face below a dramatic sky looming over the green trees on Victoria Embankment by the Egyptian obelisk Cleopatra's Needle with boats on the River Thames next to Waterloo Bridge along the side. Built for Shell and BP / British Petroleum in 1932, the Art Deco style Shell Mex House is located at 80 The Strand on the site of the Hotel Cecil; during World War Two the building housed the Ministry of Supply and was damaged by a bomb in 1940; it was returned to Shell-Mex and BP in 1948 and became the headquarters of Shell UK from 1976-1990s. Printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son Ltd, London. Horizontal. Good condition, staining, restored tears, restored creasing, backed on linen.
