Original vintage travel poster - Visit Bombay for Pleasure or Business - featuring boats sailing at sea on the busy waterfront with the Gateway of India monument in the background, a man in a sailor uniform and sunglasses waving to the viewer whilst standing on the bow of a speedboat in the foreground, a family fishing on a rowing boat and a man hoisting a sail on a traditional dhow sailing boat, set within a yellow line frame with a scroll and the State Emblem of India above and the bold yellow lettering on the brown margin below. Opened in 1924 the ceremonial Gateway of India arch monument in Mumbai (Bombay) was built to commemorate the coronation of George V as Emperor of India in 1911; the triumphal arch is styled on Indo-Islamic 16th century Gujarati architecture designed by the Scottish architect George Wittet (1878-1926), the first President of The Indian Institute of Architects (established 1917). Issued by the Directorate of Publicity, Bombay. Artist signature printed in bottom right of image. Good condition, restored punched holes on bottom edge, restored tears, restored creasing, some discolouration, backed on linen.
