1918-2018 World War One Poster Exhibition
8th November 2018
** NOTE: Due to the number of visitors and interest we have received, we have decided to extend this exhibition until the end of November. **
To mark the centenary of the First World War, we will be holding an exhibition of original vintage World War One posters at our gallery from 1-17 November. Our feature display will include war and propaganda posters issued by all sides of the conflict, including the UK, USA, Germany and Russia.
Posters were the most effective visual way for governments to spread their message to the whole population during WWI. These included recruitment posters urging men to do their duty and enlist (compulsory conscription wasn’t introduced in Britain until 1916), and posters encouraging women to join the Land Army and help with relief organisations such as the Red Cross and YWCA.
Information posters were also produced offering practical advice on food conservation and planting victory gardens during periods of food shortages, and to boost morale. To help finance the war, posters for war bonds were designed to raise money as part of the war effort. National flags and symbolism were also often used in posters, such as the iconic Uncle Sam in the US and John Bull in the UK, and the Allied depiction of the German Hun wearing a spiked helmet.
We will be making a donation to The Royal British Legion for every First World War poster sold during November in support of their #ThankYou100 remembrance. A collection box and poppies will also be available at our gallery.
All our original vintage WWI posters are listed on our website at www.AntikBar.co.uk, available to purchase at our gallery and online with worldwide delivery:
